The Golden Touch
King Midas lived a long time ago. He was a very rich man. He had heaps and heaps of gold. But still he wanted more. Bacchus, Jupiter’s son, made him a gift. It was this: everything that he touched turned to gold.
He went out into the forest, he touched an oak branch, and it turned to gold. He picked a wild rose and it turned to gold. He touched the green grass and it turned to bright yellow gold. He touched a stone and it turned to gold.
King Midas was glad. He went home as fast as he could. He sat down to dinner. He put some food to his lips, but as he did so it turned to gold.
The poor king groaned. He said, “What shall I do? I can not eat gold. I shall die”. Just then Bacchus came to help him.
King Midas said, “O help me. Take away this gift”. The god kindly consented, and said, “Go down to the river and bathe in its waters”.
The king obeyed, but the virtue which left his body was communicated to the waters of the river, which was famous ever since for its golden sands.

El rey Midas vivió hace mucho tiempo. Él era un hombre muy rico. Tenía montones y montones de oro. Pero aún quería más. Baco, el hijo de Júpiter, le hizo un regalo. Esto era: todo lo que tocaba se convertía en oro.
