The Rabbit who was afraid
I. The monkey in the tree
Once upon a time a rabbit went to sleep under a tree. All at once he waked up.
“Oh, my! What could I do”, he said, “If the earth should be breaking up!”
Just at that moment a monkey was up in the tree. He let a coconut drop to the ground. The coconut fell down on the grass. It fell just back of the rabbit.
II. The alarm. The rabbits running
The rabbit heard the noise, when the coconut fell to the ground. He said to himself. “What is that noise? The earth must be breaking up!”
He got up, and he ran, and he ran, just as fast as he could. He did not once look back to see what had made the noise.
Another rabbit saw him running away. He called after him. “Why are you running so fast?” – Don’t ask me! cried the rabbit. But the other rabbit still ran along. “What is the matter?” he cried.
Then the first rabbit answered, “Surely you must know! The earth is all breaking up!”
The second rabbit cried, “Dear me! So, the earth is all breaking up!”
Then the second rabbit ran along just as fast as he could go after the first rabbit.
The next rabbit they met ran along. And so did all the others. Soon there were many more rabbits running just as fast as they could.
III. General Alarm. All the animals running
The rabbits met a deer. They called out the deer, “The earth is all breaking up!” – “Dear me!” cried the deer. “So, the earth is all breaking up!” Then the deer ran along with them.
They met a fox. The deer called to the fox, “Come along, come along! The earth is all breaking up!” The fox cried, “Dear me! Dear me! So the earth is all breaking up!” And the fox ran right along.
Soon they met an elephant. The fox cried, “Come, Mr. Elephant! Don’t you know the earth is all breaking up?” The elephant cried. “Dear me! Dear me! So the earth is all breaking up!” Then the elephant ran along with the rabbits and the deer and the fox.
IV. King Lion
The lion saw the animals running. He heard them cry, “The earth is all breaking up!” He thought that could not be so. So he ran up before the animals and roared three times.
When they heard King Lion roar, they stopped running at once.
“Why are you running so fast?” asked the lion. – “Alas! King Lion”, they cried, “The earth is all breaking up!”
V. Nobody saw, but everybody believed
“Who saw the earth breaking up?” asked the lion.
“I did not”, said the elephant. “Ask the fox. He told me about it”.
“I did not”, said the fox. “Ask the deer. He told me about it”.
“I did not”, said the deer. “Ask the rabbits. They told me about it”.
One after another each rabbit said, “No! I did not see it! Another rabbit told me about it”.
At last the lion came to the little rabbit who had been the first to say that the earth was all breaking up.
He asked, “How do you know that the earth is all breaking up?”
“Oh, I know”, said the rabbit. I went to sleep under a tree. When I waked up I thought, “What could I do if the earth should break up? At that moment I heard the noise of the earth breaking up, and I ran away”.
VI. There was no reason to be afraid
The lion said, “Come with me. Perhaps if we look at the tree we can see what is the matter”.
The rabbit got on the lion’s back, and away they went like the wind. The other animals waited for them.
The rabbit told the lion when they were near the tree where he was sleeping.
The lion saw the very place where the rabbit had gone to sleep. The monkey was no more in the tree; but the lion saw the very coconut that the monkey had dropped near by.
Then the lion said to the rabbit, “It must have been the noise of the coconut dropping to the ground. We’ll go back and tell them”.
So the lion ran back again and told the other animals all about it.
If it had not been for wise King Lion, they would be running still.

El conejo que tenía miedo
I. El mono en el árbol
Érase una vez un conejo se fue a dormir debajo de un árbol. De repente se despertó.
"¡Oh, mi Dios! ¿Qué podría hacer yo?” dijo “¡Si la tierra se estuviera rompiendo!”
Justo en ese momento había un mono en el árbol. Dejó caer un coco al suelo. El coco cayó sobre la hierba. Justo detrás del conejo.
II. La alarma. Los conejos corriendo
El conejo escuchó el ruido, cuando el coco cayó al suelo. Se dijo a sí mismo. "¿Que es ese ruido? ¡La tierra se debe estar rompiendo!"
Se levantó y corrió y corrió tan rápido como pudo. Ni una sola vez miró hacia atrás para ver qué había hecho el ruido.
Otro conejo lo vio huir. Lo llamó. "¿Por qué corres tan rápido?" - ¡No me preguntes! gritó el conejo. Pero el otro conejo siguió corriendo. "¿Cuál es el problema?" gritó.
Entonces el primer conejo respondió: “¡Seguro que debes saberlo! ¡La tierra se está rompiendo!"
El segundo conejo gritó: “¡Dios mío! ¡Entonces, la tierra se está rompiendo!"
Luego, el segundo conejo corrió tan rápido como pudo tras el primer conejo.
El siguiente conejo que encontraron corrió. Y también lo hicieron todos los demás. Pronto hubieron muchos más conejos corriendo tan rápido como podían.
III. Alarma general. Todos los animales corriendo
Los conejos se encontraron con un ciervo. Llamaron al ciervo: "¡La tierra se está rompiendo!" - "¡Pobre de mí!" gritó el ciervo. "¡Así que, la tierra se está rompiendo!" Entonces el ciervo corrió con ellos.
Encontraron a un zorro. El ciervo llamó al zorro: “¡Ven, ven! ¡La tierra se está rompiendo!" El zorro gritó: “¡Dios mío! ¡Pobre de mí! ¡Entonces la tierra se está rompiendo!" Y el zorro corrió a lo largo.
Pronto se encontraron con un elefante. El zorro gritó: “¡Ven, señor elefante! ¿No sabe que la tierra se está rompiendo?" El elefante gritó. "¡Pobre de mí! ¡Pobre de mí! ¡Entonces la tierra se está rompiendo!" Luego, el elefante corrió junto con los conejos, el ciervo y el zorro.
IV. El Rey León
El león vio correr a los animales. Los escuchó gritar: "¡La tierra se está rompiendo!". Él pensó que no podía ser así. Así que corrió delante de los animales y rugió tres veces.
Cuando escucharon rugir al Rey León, ellos dejaron de correr de inmediato.
"¿Por qué corren tan rápido?" preguntó el león. - "¡Pobre de mí! Rey León”, gritaban,“¡La tierra se está rompiendo!”.
V. Nadie vio, pero todos creyeron
"¿Quién vio la tierra romperse?" preguntó el león.
“No lo hice”, dijo el elefante. Pregúntele al zorro. Él me lo contó.
“No lo hice”, dijo el zorro. Pregúntele al ciervo. Él me lo contó.

Por fin, el león se acercó al conejito que había sido el primero en decir que la tierra se estaba rompiendo.

“Oh, lo sé”, dijo el conejo. Me fui a dormir debajo de un árbol. Cuando desperté pensé: “¿Qué podría hacer si la tierra se rompiera? En ese momento escuché el ruido de la tierra al romperse y me escapé”.
VI. No había razón para tener miedo
El león dijo: “Ven conmigo. Quizás si miramos el árbol veamos qué es lo que pasa”.
El conejo se subió al lomo del león y se alejaron como el viento. Los otros animales los esperaban.
El conejo le dijo al león cuando estaban cerca del árbol donde estaba durmiendo.
El león vio el mismo lugar donde el conejo se había ido a dormir. El mono ya no estaba en el árbol; pero el león vio el mismo coco que el mono había dejado caer cerca.
Entonces el león le dijo al conejo: “Debe haber sido el ruido del coco cayendo al suelo. Volveremos y les diremos”.
Así que el león volvió corriendo y se lo contó a los demás animales.
Si no hubiera sido por el sabio Rey León, seguirían corriendo.
